(GORE BAY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has arrested and charged one person with attempted murder following a firearm-related incident in Manitoulin.
On Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at approximately 1:30 a.m., members of the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a firearm-related incident in the area of Emery Road and Highway 542 in Gordon Township. There were no physical injuries reported.
As a result of the investigation, Cade MCCURDY, 23 years old of Gordon Township, was arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code offences:
- Attempt to commit murder, section 239(1)(b)
- Assault, section 266
- Pointing a firearm, section 87
- Firearm use while committing offence, section 85(1)(a) – two counts
- Careless use of firearm, section 86(1)
- Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, section 88
- Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, section 264.1(1)(a)
- Obstruct peace officer, section 129(a)
- Breaking and entering a dwelling-house with intent to commit indictable offence, section 348(1)(a)
The accused was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on Friday, January 9, 2026.
The investigation remains ongoing under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from the Manitoulin OPP Crime Unit, the OPP Forensic Identification Services, the OPP Canine Unit and the OPP Emergency Response Team.
