Municipality of Brockton Opens Lobies Park Outdoor Skating Oval in Walkerton

Brockton, Ontario (January 29, 2021) –The Municipality of Brockton is proud to announce the grand opening of the Lobies Park Skating Oval in Walkerton! The new outdoor skating oval is located at Lobies Park Campground (20 Hannah Street, Walkerton) and is approximately 280m in length.

In late December 2020 Bruce Power announced their generous donation for two community initiatives in the Municipality of Brockton, including the Lobies Park Skating Oval to promote mental and physical wellness as part of their Be a Light: Beating COVID-19 Together campaign.

The Municipality is adhering to public health guidelines, and has established specific rules and regulations in accordance with the COVID-19 pandemic, including screening requirements, face coverings, and physical distancing.

Skaters must register to book their 40 minute timeslot for a maximum of 15 patrons with the Municipality’s Parks and Recreation Department by phone at 519-881-0625 or toll free at 1-877-885-8084 Ext. 200, or by emailing [email protected]. Booking times will be awarded on a first-come-first-serve basis. Cancellations can be made by calling or emailing the Recreation Department. Bookings may be cancelled or pushed back due to unsafe conditions or inclement weather. Staff will be on-site to monitor the oval, and ensure appropriate physical distancing measures are in place, and will further disinfect the facility after each booking.

The Skating Oval will operate from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The hours of operation may be adjusted depending on the ice or weather conditions. The maximum occupancy for the oval is currently capped at 15 skaters per time slot.

Representatives from Bruce Power joined Municipal staff and Council representatives for the grand opening announcement on Friday, January 29, 2021 at Lobies Park in Walkerton. The oval officially opened on Friday January 29, 2021 for skaters who had pre-booked their timeslots.

Mayor Chris Peabody shared his enthusiasm, “Brockton is pleased to welcome skaters to the new Lobies Park Skating Oval. The skating oval is permitted in accordance with Provincial Guidelines to support physical activity and exercise as a key component to mental health and wellbeing. I encourage residents to book a time slot and enjoy the outdoors by following established health and safety protocols. Stay safe and have fun!”
