(Wingham, North Huron) North Huron held a “special” meeting Friday morning to receive a very disturbing report from their accountant, 2025 audited financial statements. The report showed that one of the highest tax rates in Ontario is having a devastating effect on families and businesses in North Huron. In 2019, only 4.6% of taxes were in arrears, 2024 it jumped to 7.2%, in 2025 it jumped to 13%. Agenda Package: https://nhuron-pub.escribemeetings.com/FileStream.ashx?DocumentId=34355
Despite the Public’s inability to pay the high taxes, Council recently voted themselves a raise. One of the reasons was they believed they simply weren’t getting a big enough portion of the budget when compared to other municipalities.
NOTE: If you don’t pay your taxes for 2 years, town hall will sell your property to collect that money they demand from you.
Next Council Meeting 05Oct2026, 271 Frances Street. The public is encouraged to attend and ask questions before the meeting, and demand answers. NOTE: North Huron has agreed to stop arresting people for exercising their Charter Rights and video recording council meetings.
Some believe this a tax revolt, and citizens are simply refusing to pay their taxes. A more likely explanation is that families simply can’t afford the extreme taxes in Wingham, Blyth and East-Wawanosh.
