(HURON EAST, ON) – A novice driver from London has been charged with Refuse to Provide Breath Sample following a traffic stop that took place over the weekend. Shortly before 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, 2017 Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were conducting Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) checks at a checkpoint located at the intersection of Walton Road and McDonald Line.
While at the RIDE program officers noticed a GMC pickup truck approaching the RIDE checkpoint when it abruptly came to a stop and turned around. Officers felt this was suspicious so they followed after the pickup truck and stopped it just down the road from the checkpoint. While speaking with the driver the investigating officer detected the odour of alcohol coming from the driver. A demand for the roadside screening test was made and the driver refused to provide a sample.
As a result, the novice driver, 18-year-old Caroline HARMER from London has been charged with Refuse to Provide Breath Sample. She was later released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for July 10, 2017 at the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich. Her licence has been seized for 90 days and her motor vehicle will be impounded for the week.
