Paying Taxes With Gift Cards Turns Out To Be A Scam

(WELLINGTON COUNTY, ON) – Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding people to exercise caution when being solicited for money after receiving two reports of people being scammed.

On September 20 at approximately 6:40 p.m. OPP were contacted by an individual from Fergus who fell victim to the Canada Revenue Scam. The victim provided unknown suspect(s) with $1000 in gift cards after being contacted by someone claiming to be from Canada Revenue.

Earlier in the day OPP were contacted by an individual from Guelph-Eramosa who allowed remote access to their computer on the premise they were to receive a virus protection program. The victim paid the suspect $800 in Itunes cards and did not receive the product.

Legitimate companies do not request gift cards/Itunes cards as a form of payment. If you are questioning the legitimacy of a company do your research before providing payment.
