(Ottawa) In partnership with the Trans Community, the Ottawa Police Service will recognize Trans Day of Remembrance and display a banner honouring this day at the Ottawa Police. Light refreshments will be served. Members of the media and community are invited to attend.

Brief History of the International Trans Day of Remembrance
The Trans Day of Remembrance was established to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-trans hatred or prejudice. Events are held internationally in November to honour Trans people who have died through violence.
The Trans Day of Remembrance serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes. The Trans Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honours the lives of community members who might otherwise be forgotten. The Trans Day of Remembrance gives people a chance to step forward with the Trans Community and stand in vigil, memorializing those who have died by violence.
The first event took place in 1999 in San Francisco, to honour Rita Hester, who had been brutally murdered the previous year.
On Wednesday, November 20, at 7:00 p.m., a Candlelight Vigil will take place at the Canadian Human Rights Monument (located at Elgin & Lisgar Street, in Ottawa).
