Phone Scam Artists Still Using – You’ve Won A Prize””

(HURON TWP, ON) – On December 6th, 2010 at 5:42 pm, the South Bruce OPP received a complaint about a very aggressive telemarketer representing themselves as an employee of ADT Security Services. The caller stated, “You’ve won an alarm system”. When the home owner began refusing the system, the caller became more aggressive, before using profanity to intimidate the home owner into cooperating.

A common tactic for fraudulent telemarketers is to start off with “You’ve won a free item or a free trip”. How can you win a contest that you didn’t enter in the first place? Never provide personal information over the phone and don’t be afraid to hang up on an aggressive caller. “Don’t be pushed into making a bad deal, if it seems to good to be true, it is”.
