(WEST PARRY SOUND, ON) – The Festive R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) Initiative debuted November 23, 2013 and will run until January 2, 2014. To date, the West Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has conducted 73 R.I.D.E. checkpoints throughout the District of West Parry Sound. OPP Officers have issued three 3-day driver’s licence suspensions (drivers had Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) between .05 to .08 mg/100L) and have charged one person with impaired driving.
Thinking of refusing a breath test?
Think again. Motorists who refuse a breath test will be charged with a criminal code offence and immediately have their driver’s license suspended for 90 days.
Think you can have a few drinks and be sure you’ll blow under the legal limit?
Think again. Drivers who blow in the BAC “Warn Range†of .05 to .08 pose a danger to themselves and other road users. If caught driving in the warn range, you will receive an immediate 3-day driver’s licence suspension at the roadside and the suspension period increases with subsequent offences to 7 then 30 days.
Impaired driving remains the leading criminal cause of death in Canada. Having ‘one too many’ is a crime once you get behind the wheel. West Parry Sound OPP officers will be out in your neighbourhood in an effort to remove the threat of the impaired driver, and reduce the death toll on Ontario roads.
“I would hope that people use common sense and plan ahead†states West Parry Sound Detachment Commander, Staff Sergeant Ron Campbell. “An unfortunate tragedy can be avoided by thinking of others before you get behind the wheel when you have been drinking.â€
West Parry Sound Police Officers would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season and remember, if you drink don’t drive.
