OPP Crack Down – Over 30 Charges In One Day

(PERTH COUNTY, ON) On Tuesday February 01, 2011, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Perth County OPP officers were actively conducting traffic enforcement on Perth County roads as over 30 traffic related charges were laid.

A total of 18 speeders were ticketed as well as a number of drivers were issued miscellaneous Highway Traffic Act tickets.

Nine drivers were also charged under the Countering Distracted Driving Green Transportation Act. These drivers were operating handheld communication or entertainment devices while operating their motor vehicles. This legislation has been in effect since October 26, 2009, but it has been since February 01, 2010 that police agencies in Ontario have started to ticket motorists.

When looking at these numbers, Staff Sergeant Joel Skelding of the Perth County OPP said “I am disturbed by the fact that so many drivers in Perth County are continuing to take chances by operating their cell phones and handheld devices while driving. They are putting their own safety and those of others on the line. It has been exactly a year since we have been actively enforcing this law so 9 drivers charged in one day is disappointing”.

The Perth County OPP will continue to enforce traffic laws in an attempt to decrease the number of collisions and fatalities in Perth County.
