(SOUTH HURON, ON) – Huron OPP officers investigated two crashes this morning at the intersection of Airport Line, which is controlled by a stop sign, and Dashwood Road. The collisions occurred within two hours of each other.
The first crash occurred at 7:00 am and involved a northbound vehicle on Airport Line and an eastbound vehicle on Dashwood Road. The driver in the first crash stopped at the stop sign but because his window was covered in frost, proceeded into the intersection without being able to ensure the way was clear. He collided with an eastbound vehicle. The 24 year old Airport Line driver was taken to the South Huron Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. He was charged with one count of Fail to Wear Seatbelt Assembly and one count of Fail to Yield to Traffic on Through Highway.
The second crash occurred at 8:45 am while clean up was still underway from the first collision. Both involved drivers were distracted from the task of driving, as they were watching clean up crews. This crash involved a southbound vehicle on Airport Line and a westbound vehicle on Dashwood Road. The southbound driver again stopped at the stop sign and proceeded into the intersection where it collided with the westbound vehicle. The occupants of the Airport Line vehicle were taken to the South Huron Hospital and were treated for non-life threatening injuries. The 29 year old driver of the vehicle on Airport Line was charged with Fail to Yield to Traffic on Through Highway.
This intersection is flat and clear and there are no view obstructions. Drivers are just too rushed and inattentive to take the time to look properly and ensure the way is clear. Both crashes had the potential to be deadly. We are relieved that injuries were minor but we are disheartened by the driving actions of the motorists involved.
