The Waterloo Regional Police Service has received complaints in relation to an ongoing telemarketing scam. In this scam, the caller claims to be employed with the Canada Revenue Agency and alleges that the victim has outstanding taxes owed to Canada Revenue. The caller indicates that the victim will be fined and arrested at their residence immediately if payment is not made. The victim is instructed to attend a specific location, typically Home Depot, and select Pay Power Re-load Credit Cards and load them in the amount of the outstanding debt. The victim is instructed to scratch the silver panel on the back of the card and provide the 10 digit activation PIN allowing the caller to activate the card and deplete the funds. Residents of the Region of Waterloo who have lost funds in one of these scams should call the Waterloo Regional Police Service at (519) 653-7700 to file a report. You should also submit a report with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre which is operated by the Competition Bureau, RCMP and OPP. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre tracks trends in fraud nation wide and is the national call centre for mass marketing fraud and identity theft.
