(CENTRAL HURON, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating an attempted scam that was reported to police yesterday afternoon. A Clinton resident reported she received a call at home from a female that identified herself as an employee of the Canada Revenue Agency. The female provided a bogus case number and complaint number and proceeded to tell the resident she owed an outstanding tax bill of $3,800.
At that point a male picked up the phone and also identified himself as a Canada Revenue Agency employee. He spoke with an aggressive tone and tried to intimidate the resident. He demanded the female make a decision within one hour on how she was going to pay her outstanding tax bill. He then stated if she didn’t take immediate action the police would be at her door within three hours to arrest her and take her to jail.
The scammer instructed the resident to purchase “Home Depot†and “Safeway†gift cards. Once the cards were purchased she was to provide him with the authorization codes to clear off her outstanding balance.
The Clinton resident reported the caller was very aggressive, argumentative and threatening to her.
Huron County OPP would like to remind everyone to be extremely skeptical of any unsolicited communication from people purporting to be from the Canada Revenue Agency. The communication has high potential to be a scam whether it is through the telephone, mail, or email. Be especially careful if there is a request for personal information.
Also be aware: the OPP and RCMP do not contact individuals for the purposes of collecting fines or taxes and NEVER asks the public to make a payment over the telephone.
