(PERTH COUNTY, ON) The Perth County OPP was advising the public that extra officers would be utilized to enforce traffic laws in the County over the Canada Day Long Weekend.
Staff Sergeant Joel Skelding of the Perth County OPP said “Our strategy has been effective, and as the numbers indicate we have seen no serious collisions or injuries. Our officers have been actively enforcing the violations that cause the majority of crashes and the public seems to have heeded the warnings we gave them about our weekend enforcement.â€
The Perth County Canada Day weekend statistics reveal that a total of 199 speeding charges were laid, 7 seatbelt citations were issued, and 5 distracted driving tickets were given out. Another 13 drivers were charged for moving violations and 28 received tickets for miscellaneous Highway Traffic Act offences. One Off Road Vehicle charge was laid as well as one Criminal Code driving charge for a disqualified driver.
Perth County OPP officers also dedicated 115 hours towards R.I.D.E. programs in which they stopped and checked a total of 3427 motorists. No impaired charged were laid, but one driver lost his drivers licence for 3 days and a second will be without a licence for 7 days due to a reading of over 50mgs of alcohol on a roadside breath test instrument.
The minor collisions during the weekend included 3 car deer crashes, a parking lot fender bender, a vehicle under repair which rolled down car ramps onto the driveway striking another car as well as a utility trailer gone astray (see below).
