Charges laid in home renovation fraud targeting seniors

(Ottawa) The Ottawa Police ServiceOrganized Fraud Sectionlaid charges against three men after a senior citizen was defrauded of over $250,000 in a renovation scam that lasted almost three years.

In June 2011, the senior citizen was first approached by the men to do work around the house. Over the following three years, the men would return to the house uninvited to complete unnecessary projects. The victim would be charged for work that was never completed or very poorly done.

As a result of the police investigation into a complaint filed in October 2013, Donald BURTON, 49 years old of Arnprior, Tong TRAN, 40 years old of Ottawa and Keong TANG, 47 years old a foreign national (that was recently deported) were each charged as follows:

Burton and Tran face one count of Fraud over $5,000,
All three men face one count of Conspiring to commit an indictable offence and Laundering proceeds of crime.
