(MUNICIPALITY OF WEST PERTH, ON) On Wednesday July 23, 2014, shortly before 2:30 p.m. Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were informed of a collision involving a minivan and a bicycle at the intersection of St. Andrew St. and Montreal St. in Mitchell.
Investigation revealed that shortly after 2 p.m. two boys, residents of the Municipality of West Perth were riding their bicycles west bound on Montreal St. One of the boys failed to yield from the stop sign and crossed St. Andrew St directly in the path of a north bound minivan operated by a 19 year old female from Municipality of West Perth. The van contacted the bike and the seven year old boy fell to the pavement. The boy was transported to a local hospital by ambulance where he was treated and released. The boy’s helmet protected him and he was found to have sustained only minimal injuries.
This collision is a reminder for bicyclists to abide by the rules of the road and to properly wear their bicycle helmets. This boy’s parents will be purchasing him a new helmet since helmets are designed to work in one crash only and then should be replaced.
