The Guelph Police Service would like to alert the public about a phone call scam where the caller talks about how slow the persons computer is working and trying to get unsuspecting people to sign on to their computer. It is believed that the goal of this phone call is for the suspects to get remote access to the computer in order to put spyware on it and/or to get individuals to purchase “lifetime†virus protection.
Other variations of the scam also involve consumers responding to popâ€Âup ads online offering antiâ€Âvirus software. These popâ€Âups are referred to as Scareware as the message in the popâ€Âup is commonly crafted to entice feelings of alarm and anxiety or that there is a threat to their computer if they don’t click on the link.
