Bus VS Deer Collision

(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH SOUTH, ON) On Thursday October 23, 2014, Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were contacted by a local school bus company advising them that one of their buses had struck a deer at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Road 134, four concessions south of Sebringville. No one was injured on the bus but the bus was damaged.

This collision has been one of 22 motor vehicle / deer collisions in Perth County this month. With eight days remaining this month the Perth County deer collisions may well exceed the 25 deer that were hit in October 2013. (In October 2012 there were 33 deer collisions).

During the month of October, Perth County see a significant increase in deer collisions with the highest numbers occurring in the month of November. In November 2013 there were 56 reported deer collisions in Perth County, while in November 2012 there were 63.

We are approaching November, which is normally the time of year when we see increased deer movement. Wild animals are unpredictable at all times. However, deer are bound to move across roadways this time of year as this is their mating season. Peak times for collisions are 5 a.m. – 7 a.m., and 5 p.m. – 11 p.m. Keep in mind though that an encounter with a deer may occur at any time.
