(PERTH COUNTY, ON) From Monday January 10 to January 14, 2012, Perth County OPP officers conducted a traffic campaign focusing attention on intersection related offences where drivers fail to stop or yield when required.
During this five day period, officers concentrated their patrol efforts on intersections identified by complaints from the general public and high violation areas as experienced by patrol officers. This campaign mirrors Ontario’s first “Stop and Look campaign†initiated in Perth County in May 2010. During that campaign, a total of 132 charges were laid within a five day period. This campaign was initiated when it became apparent that failing to stop or yield at intersections resulted in a quarter of Perth County’s fatal crashes.
The numbers for last week’s Perth County OPP “Stop and Look†campaign are in and the results indicate that 72 tickets were issued to offending drivers who failed to stop and yield. In addition, numerous other offences were observed, and the appropriate charges were laid. A stolen pickup truck caught an officer’s attention when it failed to stop at an intersection. This resulted in the male driver being arrested and recovery of the truck. An impaired driver was charged as well as four seatbelt offenders and a driver talking on a cell phone. Eighteen speeders were fined and six other miscellaneous tickets were issued.
Staff Sergeant Joel Skelding of the Perth County OPP stated, “the campaign’s purpose was to make drivers aware of the importance of stopping and yielding at intersections, thereby decreasing the number of fatal and serious injury collisions at Perth County intersections. Our officers will continue to patrol intersections in hopes of educating the motoring public and reducing collisionsâ€.
Please continue to “STOP AND LOOKâ€.
