Tensions escalated in Maldives last month, when the army arrested a criminal court judge. The Judge’s arrest was a result of him releasing an opposition activist that was detained without a warrant. Human Rights groups demanded the release of the Judge, and were calling for UN intervention to settle the dispute.
On Monday, police stood down and sided with the protestors. The President’s office denied allegations that the army fired rubber bullets at the police and protestors.
Mr. Nasheed announced his resignation on television, It will be better for the country in the current situation if I resign. I don’t want to run the country with an iron fist. I am resigning”.
This regime change is a result of humanity starting to adopt a zero tolerance policy in regard to their political leaders. Abuse and self interest should no longer be tolerated from any elected official. Once a government tries to silence or abuse its citizens
