Handyman & Fraudster Warning

(Huron County, ON) The Huron OPP wants to warn property owners of an increase in the number of “home improvement” scams being reported in the area as well as neighbouring counties.

Renovation and handyman fraudsters seem to be hitting the streets to find a trusting soul to supplement their income. We also have had numerous reports of ‘air testing” and “water testing” inside residences. Often elderly people who live alone and in remote areas are becoming the targets of these smooth talkers.

In a recent case in Lambton County a 78 year old woman was taken for over $9,000 to cut down a tree.

If anyone shows up at your door reporting property deficiencies that they can fix immediately, be suspicious.

Do not allow anyone into your home.

Do not agree to have them do any work at the time they show up at your door. Request a written estimate, obtain a business card, record the licence plate number of their vehicle and send them on their way.

If you then believe that an item may need to be repaired, call legitimate companies to obtain further estimates. You also may wish to speak to a friend or family member about the repairs. Many times other companies will confirm that no repairs are required.

If it turns out that repairs are needed and you chose to go with the original estimate, make sure that they abide by the estimate and complete services to your satisfaction.

If their services are substandard, then withhold payment until it is done properly. If they persist or are intimidating by demanding payment, call the police immediately.
