Flaming Flying Tire Damages Car

(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH EAST, ON) On Tuesday May 25, 2010, at approximately 10:55 a.m., Perth County OPP officers were called to the intersection of Perth Road 119 and Line 47 where a vehicle had been struck by a run-away tire.

Investigation indicated that north bound double axle, fifth wheel cattle trailer was being pulled by a truck on Perth Road 119 just south of Line 47. The trailer was loaded and was travel at the highway speed. The rear passenger side wheel caught fire and broke away from the axle. The burning tire bounced towards Line 47 where a vehicle had been stopped at the stop sign controlled intersection. The tire struck the rear drivers side corner of the stopped car causing extensive damage. The tire continued and came to rest in a water filled ditch, extinguishing the fire. No injuries were caused as a result of this collision.

The truck driver was unaware of the lost wheel until he arrived at his destination and noticed that the wheel was missing. A check of the wheel and axle indicated that there was no sign of neglect on the truck driver’s part. The Ministry of Transportation has been notified of this incident.
