At last night’s council meeting, there was a photo presentation of
the rot at Wingham Town Hall, proving that our facilities have not
been maintained in decades. A sample of wood was brought in to
show the horrible condition the belfry is in. A photo of
the unmaintained exterior showed how water was being funneled in to
the structure, causing much of the rot. Simple annual painting
and inspection would have prevented virtually all of the
damage. The most damming photo was of the roof on the
belfry. The belfry had a section of roof membrane missing,
exposing several square feet of wood, allowing water to easily
infiltrate. This water infiltration has rotted out parts of
the belfry, making it sway up to 6 inches, simply by pushing on it.
