On October 14, 2013 at 3:25 p.m., the Guelph Police were contacted, as a Guelph resident had reported locating a pill in a 650 gram Danone Activia strawberry yogurt. The yogurt was purchased on October 13, 2013 at the Zehrs store located at 160 Kortright Road West.
Further investigation revealed that the complainant had combined the yogurt and a powdered probiotic supplement into a cup and then ate the yogurt from the cup. The complainant noticed the pill in her mouth however did not ingest the pill. The complainant did not suffer any ill effects from this incident.
The shipment of yogurt that was delivered at the same time as the purchased yogurt in question, has been removed from the Zehrs store. The powdered supplement that was mixed with the yogurt has been identified as UltraFlora Synergy which is manufactured by Metagenics Canada. The Metagenics supplement used by the complainant was purchased by her in a 50 gram bottle from her own business, Health Insights Inc. located at 100 Crimea Street, Guelph. Metagenics is a supplier for Health Insights Inc. however; the product is also carried by other health food stores and holistic clinics with the city and surrounding jurisdictions. Danone and Metagenics have been contacted by the Guelph Police Service and they will be conducting a quality control investigation into their products.
The investigation is still ongoing.
