Computer Repair Scam

(CULROSS TWP, ON) – On October 17, 2013 at 3:31 pm, the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report about an online computer repair scam from a resident of Culross Township. Personal information was shared with an unknown person online.

The South Bruce OPP is sending another reminder about frauds and scams. Modern, tech savvy, scammers have access to information about you and they can use the computer to create very convincing ways to take your money.

Con artists will stop at nothing to steal from you, but there is no magic to preventing fraud. If something seems too good to be true, it likely is. Always verify an unsolicited contact before you ever consider responding. Unsolicited means that you didn’t ask for it. How can you win a contest that you didn’t enter in the first place?

Fraud is a multi-billion dollar per year business that will only stop when the scammers stop making money. Anyone interested in more information on Fraud can call the Canadian Anti-Fraud centre at 1 888 495 8501 or check online at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca/.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or send a web-tip to crimestop-gb.org, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
