SIU Invokes Mandate Following Vehicle Stop

(SAUGEEN FIRST NATION, ON) On January 25th, 2015 at approximately 1:30p.m. members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a male party wanted on an outstanding warrant driving westbound on Highway 21, Township of Georgian Bluffs.

Police eventually stopped Scott ROOTE, 25, of Saugeen First Nation on Highway 21 near French Bay Road, Saugeen First Nation.

ROOTE was taken into custody and held for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound.

ROOTE has been charged with:

Flight while pursued by peace officer x 2
Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
Assault a peace officer
Resist a peace office x 2
Escape lawful custody
Fail to wear seatbelt assembly
Drive motor vehicle while holding handheld communication device x 2

As a result of an injury to the driver, the OPP has notified the province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) which has invoked its mandate. Any other inquiries should be directed to the SIU Communications at 1-416-622-2342.
