Waterloo Regional Police are in the process of completing the investigation into child pornography incidents that came to light a week ago involving grade 7 and 8 students from 3 elementary schools and 1 high school in Waterloo Region. A total of 21 youths between the ages of 11 and 14 years old have been dealt with regarding the sending of nude photos via social media.

Twenty electronic devices including smart phones, iPods, iPads and Nintendo DS gaming systems were seized and examined by investigators. The Waterloo Regional Police ICE and Tech Crimes Units assisted in this investigation. No charges will be laid. Police, in collaboration with the school Administrators, are instead using this opportunity to heighten awareness among students and their parents about the dangers and consequences of using electronic devices to take and share inappropriate images that could be interpreted as child pornography. Police will also be utilizing some community partners to assist in further educating some of the students by having them attend various programs.

Police remind parents to be diligent in educating their children on the proper use of electronic devices and in knowing how their children are using electronic devices. Parents should be checking these devices on a regular basis to ensure that they’re not being used for inappropriate purposes.
