(CENTRAL HURON, ON) – A police investigation into a serious motor vehicle collision that occurred on February 21, 2015 has resulted in the driver and adult passenger of a Pontiac Montana minivan being charged with Highway Traffic Act offences.
At approximately 10:15 p.m., Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), along with Huron County EMS personnel and Clinton Fire Department arrived at the scene of the crash located at the intersection of Huron Road (Highway 8) and Parr Line in Holmesville.
OPP West Region Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) and Huron OPP members have since determined the driver of the Pontiac Minivan was travelling westbound on Huron Road when the driver made a left turn in front of an eastbound GMC pickup truck. The driver of the pickup truck was unable to avoid the minivan and collided with the passenger side of the van.
Officers on scene found an eight year old female passenger that was completely ejected from the mini-van and a five year old female passenger that was partially ejected from the mini-van.
Investigators have since determined the female driver and her adult male passenger were not wearing seat belts. In addition, both the eight year old girl and five year old girl were unrestrained in the vehicle. Police also determined a three year old boy passenger was not secured in a forward facing child restraint seat as required by a regulation of the Highway Traffic Act.
The 8 year old girl from the Montana minivan remains in hospital with serious injuries. All other injured occupants have since been released from hospital.
The 28 year old driver of the minivan, Candaise GUAY from Central Huron, has been charged with the following Highway Traffic Act offences:
· Turn Not in Safety
· Driver Fail to Properly Wear Seat Belt
· Fail to Ensure Toddler Properly Secured
· Fail to Ensure Child Properly Secured
· Driver – Fail to Ensure Passenger Under 16 years of Age Properly Secured by seatbelt
The adult passenger in the Montana minivan, 29 year old John TOPOR from Huron East has been charged with Passenger Fail to Properly wear a seatbelt.
