Officers from the Owen Sound Police Service will be participating in the National Road Safety Week. This is a collaborative traffic enforcement and education effort by police services across Canada and is endorsed by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police.
Road Safety Week 2015 runs from May 12th to May 18th. The initiative targets high risk driving behaviours that put other drivers and the public at risk. Police Services across the country are focusing on offences that are considered the “Big 4 Killers” on our roads: impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and failure to use seatbelts or improper use of seatbelts and child restraints.
Members of the Owen Sound Police Service will be out this week and throughout the holiday weekend, conducting R.I.D.E. checks and traffic enforcement.
Inspector Wurfel states, “Within the last month we have experienced an unusual spike of serious vehicle collisions involving impaired drivers with very high blood- alcohol concentrations. Only by the grace of good fortune have none of these resulted in a fatality. Our officers will be working toward keeping these types of high risk offenders of the roads”.
The Owen Sound Police would like to remind drivers to plan ahead if you intend to consume alcohol. Remove any possibility or opportunity to drive. Do not leave your car and keys conveniently accessible, as consumption of alcohol will diminish your ability to make sound decisions regarding your ability to drive, despite the best of intentions and plans before drinking.
