Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP)

On Tuesday June 2, 2015 Waterloo Regional Police Service conducted a Distracted Driving initiative in the area of Hespeler Road and Can Amera Parkway in the City of Cambridge. Officers conducted enforcement at the intersection while an officer was situated a short distance away in plain sight monitored drivers using mobile devices while they operated their motor vehicles. The enforcement officers performed traffic stops and laid the appropriate charges. A total of 16 charges were laid in relation to driving while using a handheld communication device. Eight charges were laid in relation to other Highway Traffic Act and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act offences. The public is reminded that not only is driving while being distracted a leading cause of vehicle collisions, it also results in a substantial fine.
