Arrest Made In High School Fire

On March 2nd, 2016, Waterloo Regional Police identified and arrested a suspect believed responsible for a fire that occurred on March 1, 2016, at Preston High School. The suspect cannot be identified as they are considered a young person, under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. This individual is being held for a show cause hearing, and is charged with arson – disregard for human life, along with additional charges relating to terms of release. The Waterloo Regional Police wish to thank the community and Waterloo Region District School Board for their assistance in this investigation.

On March 1st, 2016, at approximately 1:10pm, emergency services responded to a report of a fire at Preston High School, located at 550 Rose Street, in the City of Cambridge. A small fire was contained to a rear stairwell inside the school, and was extinguished by the schools sprinkler system. Staff and students safely evacuated the school, however, one staff member was transported to hospital to be treated for possible smoke inhalation. The Waterloo Regional Police Service, Detective Branch is continuing to investigate this incident, as the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
