(MUNICIPALITY OF NORTH PERTH, ON) – On Thursday March 10, 2016, shortly before 3 p.m., an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer conducting speed enforcement on Hwy 23 south of Listowel pulled over a fast moving motor vehicle.

A silver Dodge Ram pickup truck was observed driving south bound on Hwy 23 south of Line 81 at a high rate of speed. The officer activated the police radar and a reading of 147 km/h was displayed. This is 67 km/h above the posted 80 km/h zone.

The male driver of the pickup truck, 19-year-old Tanner Cain HUDON-GIESBRECHT of Central Huron was issued a summons for “race a motor vehicle”. He is to appear in Stratford Court on April 12, 2016, to answer to this charge. His driver’s licence was suspended for seven days and his vehicle was towed from the scene and has been impounded for a week.

This is the fourth driver charged with racing within a span of 6 days. On Friday afternoon March 4th, a driver was charged on Perth Line 86 east of Listowel. On Saturday March 5th, a driver was charged on Perth Road 140 south of Teviotdale, while on Wednesday March 9th, a driver was charged on Hwy 7/8 east of Shakespeare.

These four drivers were all engaged in high risk driving behaviour and subsequently placed their lives as well as other motorist’s lives at risk. The Perth County OPP will continue to patrol and enforce traffic laws on local roadways in an attempt to keep our roadways safe.

This March Break, Perth County OPP officers will continue their regular enforcement with respect to impaired driving, speeding and seatbelt usage. They will also however concentrate heavily on distracted driving, as they are in the midst of their “Distracted Driving Campaign” which runs from March 14-20, 2016.
