(TOWNSHIP OF CHATSWORTH, ON) – Criminals use the “Romance Scam” to seek potential victims online through singles and dating-related websites. “Romance Scams” cause victims financial hardship and personal embarrassment. As a result, the fraud goes unreported to police.
Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) continue to alert the public as to the many types of frauds and scams that occur throughout the area so that they are informed and are able to recognize, reject and report the fraud to police.
On March 23, 2016 Grey County OPP was contacted to investigate a “Romance Scam” after a 36-year old male from the Township of Chatsworth sent $1,900 via Western Union to a Michigan woman he had met on an on-line dating site to help her set up a business in Canada.
