Cyclist Charged After Being Hit By Ambulance

(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH EAST, ON) – On Saturday May 14, 2016, shortly after 4 a.m., Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were dispatched to a collision involving an ambulance and a bicyclist on Highway 8 between Stratford and Sebringville.

Investigation revealed that a Perth County Paramedic Service ambulance was driving westbound in the westbound lane on Highway 8 east of Road 125. A bicyclist was also riding westbound in the westbound lane on Highway 8 near the centre of the roadway. The bicyclist was wearing dark clothing and there were no lights or reflectors on the back of the bicycle. The ambulance driver observed the bicyclist at the last minute and attempted to avoid a collision but was unable to do so.

The bicyclist was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for his non-life threatening injuries. The bicyclist has subsequently been released from hospital.

At the time of the collision it was raining.

The 32-year-old male bicyclist, a Township of Perth East resident is facing the following charges: “improper bicycle lighting”, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario, and “being intoxicated in public place”, contrary to the Liquor Licence Act of Ontario.
