In the summer of 2015, a fundraiser to raise money for INAD (Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy) research was held in Ayr. The event was well publicized and received media attention. The community, Police, Fire and local politicians attended the event to show support.

A quantity of proceeds were received from the community for this event. In January 2016, Waterloo Regional Police received information that over $5,000 in funds raised in the August 2015 event, had not been donated as advertised. As a result of the investigation, Josh DeSilva, 39, and Cynthia DeSilva, 35, were arrested and charged with Fraud over $5000 and Laundering Proceeds of Crime as it is alleged that the monies collected was not forwarded to the intended recipients. The two no longer reside in the Region of Waterloo.
