On Sunday, August 28, 2016, members of the Brantford Police Service Major Crime Unit were contacted in regards to an assault involving a weapon which had occurred in the area of Market Street and Chatham Street on Saturday, August 27, 2016, sometime between 1:00 a.m. and 2:30 a.m.
Through investigation, it was learned that two men, who are known to each other, engaged in a verbal dispute inside a licenced establishment on Market Street. The argument escalated and one man left the business to get away. The accused followed the man onto Chatham Street and engaged him in a physical fight. During the fight, the accused used a knife to stab the man in the upper left shoulder. The accused then fled the area.
The victim attended the hospital where he sought treatment for his injury.
On Sunday, August 28, 2016 at approximately 5:50 p.m. the accused, a 35 year-old Brantford man, was located and arrested. He was charged with Assault with Weapon, Assault Cause Bodily Harm, and Possession of a Dangerous Weapon and held for a bail hearing on August 19, 2016. The knife was not recovered.
On the date and time of the occurrence, it is believed that the area was heavily occupied by bar patrons. It is likely that the event had been observed by persons travelling in the area.
