“Give the Kids a Brake”
City of Guelph students are not the only ones preparing for the first day back at school this week.
The Guelph Police Service will be dedicating resources to area schools as part of the 2016 “GIVE THE KIDS A BRAKE” traffic safety initiative. During the week of September 5, 2016 officers will be deployed both at and near schools to encourage both motorists and pedestrians to comply with the “rules of the road.”
In addition to speed enforcement in designated school zones, officers will be assisting City of Guelph By Law officers in monitoring parking activities at area schools. Illegally parked cars can cause visual obstructions and traffic congestion that has the potential to endanger students, school patrollers/crossing guards and other motorists.
Parents are encouraged to walk their kids to school, but if it is necessary to drive, ensure that parking or stopping takes place in designated areas.
Officers will be issuing parking infraction notices in school zones.
Do your part to help us create safe environments in our designated school zones by obeying all traffic signs!
Additional road safety campaigns will continue over the upcoming weeks. Remember to slow down in the school zones and obey the rules of the road.

Vehicle Fire at 420 Elizabeth Street
release courtesy Guelph Fire department
On September 5, 2016, shortly before noon, the Guelph Fire Department received approximately eighteen 911 calls reporting a plume of thick black smoke and explosions at a self-storage facility located at 420 Elizabeth Street. On arrival, a large truck was found in a loading dock at the rear of the building, fully engulfed in flames. The truck was being used to mix and apply spray foam insulation. The fire was intense and required a prolonged application of water to extinguish the fire. The runoff remained in the loading dock area and was collected and transported to a facility for treatment.
There was no danger to nearby residents. A worker on scene was assessed by paramedics and fortunately, no treatment was required. There were no injuries to firefighters.
The cause of the fire could not be determined because of the extensive damage to the truck. A damage estimate is not available because some water flowed into the building and may have damaged materials stored in lockers near the loading dock.
Other agencies on scene were Guelph Police Service, Guelph-Wellington Emergency Medical Service, Environmental Protection Officer for the City, Union Gas and Guelph Hydro.
