Owen Sound Police Investigate Found Bones

On April 28, 2015 Owen Sound Police were called to a residential property regarding possible found human bones. Members of the Criminal Investigation Branch attended the scene which borders the Sydenham River just south of the mill dam. The residents of the property had been having a construction company remove an old deck at the water’s edge and had discovered the bones once the majority of the deck had been removed. The coroner was contacted and through consultation with an anthropologist, the bones were identified as being human. The scene of the discovery was preserved overnight and investigators returned today with a forensic anthropologist. The site was examined and additional excavation of the area was conducted. No additional bones were located. The bones are portions of a human skull. Preliminary examinations indicate that the skull bones are believed to be of an elderly female of pioneer origin and have been at the location for a considerable period of time. From examination of the scene, it is believed that the bones were washed to the location by the river and that they had not been buried there. It is not believed that the bones are of a forensic interest however further examination is being conducted to more conclusively determine the age of the bones.
