Type: Assault with a Weapon

Date: April 28, 2015

Incident: 15-12641

Location: Colborne Street and Alfred Street

Incident: On April 28, 2015 at approximately 5:50 p.m. Officers attended the area of Colborne Street and Alfred Street regarding a group of persons fighting. Investigation revealed that a verbal argument took place between a 27 year old man and the accused a 32 year old Brantford man. The accused grabbed the victim by his left shoulder and brandished a knife. The victim was then punched by the accused causing the victim’s lip to split. The accused fled the area on foot and was located by BPS at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Park Avenue. The accused is charged with Assault and Possession of Weapons Dangerous. The accused was released on a promise to appear to attend court on a future day.

Type: Telephone Fraud

Date: April 28, 2015

Incident: 15-12587

Incident: On the morning of April 28, 2015 the victim, a 64 year old Brantford man received a telephone call from a person identifying themselves as a representative from their financial institution security unit. The victim reports that he was told that his credit card had been compromised and unknown persons had used his credit card this morning around 4:00 a.m. in India. The victim was asked for his personal information and credit card number as verification. Shortly after the telephone call the victim telephoned his bank and discovered that he was the victim of a scam. The legitimate bank employee advised that while he was on the telephone with the fraudster his credit card was being used.

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM BEING A VICTIM OF FRAUD:

• Never give out personal information/credit card information to an unknown source over the telephone and/or unsecured email

• You can stop a telephone scam by hanging up

• When contacted about your personal accounts never click on a web link attached to the email to ‘verify’ or confirm’

• Confirm with family members or your bank before transferring any funds

• Never agree to give cash to anyone unknown to you in exchange for a cheque written to you by that individual

• Educate yourself by visiting the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website at www.antifraudcentre.ca
