(NORTH BAY, ON) – The North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driver and the operating company following multiple traffic complaints regarding a transport truck travelling on Highway 11 with smoke and sparks coming from the trailer.
On Thursday February 26, 2026, at approximately 9:45 p.m., the OPP received several reports from motorists about a southbound tractor‑trailer emitting smoke and an electrical burning smell. One caller also reported seeing sparks. While patrolling the area, officers located a detached trailer wheel on the shoulder of Highway 11 near Highway 654. The wheel was extremely hot to the touch, and sheared lug bolts and metal fragments were observed inside.
A short time later, officers located the involved commercial motor vehicle at the Wasi Weigh Scales. Two wheels had completely detached from the trailer’s axle.
As a result of the investigation, a 28‑year‑old driver from Oakville has been charged with:
· Wheel separation – commercial motor vehicle
· Drive commercial motor vehicle with a major defect
· Driver fail to surrender licence
The Brampton‑based company has been charged with Wheel separation – commercial motor vehicle. The transport truck was placed out of service for 24 hours under commercial vehicle safety regulations. No injuries were reported.
Detached wheels can travel at high speeds and pose an immediate risk to other motorists, pedestrians, and roadside workers. Anyone seeing smoke, sparks, or mechanical issues with a CMV is urged to call 9‑1‑1.
