Man arrested after girls taken to hotel for sex

A Toronto man faces luring and sexual assault charges after two Guelph teens reported he took them to a local hotel overnight.

On February 1, two 13-year-old girls were reported missing to the Guelph Police Service. The two minors were located by officers and the Guelph Police Human Trafficking Unit began an investigation as the girls reported they had been taken to a local hotel by an adult male. The parties had met through a social media platform.

On February 12, a 22-year-old Toronto man was arrested for two counts each of luring, sexual assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching.

The accused was held for a bail hearing on Thursday and has been released on conditions. He will appear in court March 18.

Alarm call leads to impaired arrest

An alarm call at a south-end business Thursday evening led to an impaired operation charge for a Guelph man.

Just before 8 p.m. officers responded to an alarm call at a business near Laird Road and Quarterman Road. All doors to the business were secure, however officers noticed an occupied vehicle in the parking lot.

Officers went to speak to the man and noted several empty alcohol bottles inside the vehicle and the keys in the ignition. He had bloodshot eyes and a strong odour of alcohol on his breath. After failing a roadside breath test he was arrested and transported to the police station, where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 57-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired operation. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court February 28.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
