More than two dozen charges following arrest
A Guelph man faces more than two dozen charges after he was arrested Monday while driving a stolen vehicle.
Monday morning, members of the Guelph Police Service Break Enter Auto Theft Unit and provincial Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) Squad located a male at an address in Kitchener and placed him under arrest.
The male, who had been the subject of an ongoing investigation, was operating a black Audi A7 with fake licence plates attached. The vehicle was determined to have been stolen from Waterloo Region earlier this month. During a search of the vehicle following the male’s arrest, officers located a homemade conducted energy weapon, a switchblade knife, a quantity of suspected crystal methamphetamine and a credit card believed to be stolen.
On October 28, two males attended a Guelph business in a white Audi Q3 with fake licence plates attached. One of the males pried open a lockbox and stole keys to a customer’s 2017 Cadillac. The males then drove off in both vehicles.
On at least two occasions, the same white Audi was used in gas drive-off thefts in Guelph. That vehicle was later recovered in Waterloo Region and determined to have been stolen from Fergus.
Investigation revealed the male arrested Monday is bound by several weapons and driving prohibitions.
A 39-year-old Guelph man faces charges including motor vehicle theft, two counts of possessing stolen property over $5,000, possessing a prohibited weapon, resisting arrest, possessing a controlled substance and more than a dozen counts of breaching court orders. He was held for a bail hearing Tuesday.
Charged with breaking into former employer nine times
A Hamilton man has been charged with breaking into his former Guelph workplace nine times since he was fired.
Just before 3 a.m. Monday police were called for a possible break and enter in progress at a business near Gordon Street and Harvard Road. Officers arrived a few minutes later and observed a grey SUV in the parking lot, which took off at a high rate of speed.
It was located a short time later at a south-end plaza and the two occupants were arrested. A third male was arrested as he walked towards the same plaza.
Investigation revealed one of the males was a former employee of the business who had previously entered the store unlawfully eight times between mid-October and mid-December. Keys to the store were recovered following his arrest.
A 36-year-old Hamilton man is charged with nine counts of break and enter. A 25-year-old Mississauga man and 18-year-old Toronto man are each charge with one count of break and enter. All will appear in court January 31.
$50k in scratch tickets stolen
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after nearly $50,000 worth of scratch-off lottery tickets were stolen from a north-end business.
Police were called Monday morning to a business on Woodlawn Road West. Investigation revealed a suspect had parked a short distance from the business just after 10 p.m. Saturday. More than three hours later the suspect approached the closed business and was able to pry open the front doors to gain entry.
They were captured on video a short time later exiting the business with two reusable shopping bags filled with scratch tickets and fleeing in their vehicle. The owner of the business advised the tickets were not activated at the time of the theft and would be flagged by the lottery corporation so they cannot be redeemed.
The suspect was described as possibly male with a medium build and wearing a black jacket, black pants, a white hoodie, white medical mask and black shoes or boots.
