(LATCHFORD, ON) – One person has died following a snowmobile incident on Bay Lake in Latchford.
On Monday, December 8, 2025, at approximately 3:10 p.m., members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), along with the North East Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), responded to a call for service involving three snowmobilers travelling on Bay Lake. Two of the snowmobilers broke through the ice and became trapped in the water.
Additional emergency resources were deployed, including the Latchford Fire Department, the Temiskaming Shores Fire Department and its Ice Water Rescue Team and drone, as well as Ornge air ambulance.
After a courageous and coordinated effort by several rescuers, both individuals were pulled from the water and transported to hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, one of the snowmobilers was pronounced deceased at hospital. The second individual sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The OPP reminds all outdoor enthusiasts to exercise extreme caution when travelling on frozen waterways. Ice conditions can be unpredictable, and checking ice thickness and safety before venturing out is essential.
