(CENTRE WELLINGTON, ON) – An Elora resident is charged following a traffic stop.
On January 30, 2026, at approximately 4:00 p.m., a member of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the report of a theft from a business on Parkside Drive West in Fergus. The accused concealed a bottle of vodka and left the store without attempting to pay for it. The accused was recognized as being involved in two previously reported alcohol thefts from the same business on January 16 and January 24, 2026. The accused remained outstanding.
On February 3, 2026, at approximately 11:45 p.m., a member of the Wellington County OPP was conducting proactive traffic enforcement on Sophia Street in Elora, when they located the accused’s vehicle and observed signs of impairment.
As a result of the investigation, John KACHUR, a 37-year-old from Elora, is charged under the Criminal Code with:
- Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
- Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
- Theft under $5,000 – shoplifting (three counts)
A 90-day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension (ADLS) and a 7-day vehicle impoundment were initiated as per statute.
The accused was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Guelph on March 17, 2026.
